We find it hard to believe that it's already February. But now the temperatures have remained in the single digits long enough to finally feel like winter. The only thing missing is the snowfall. Feast your eyes on the deep royal-blues and red-violet purples of February’s birthstone, amethyst. Amethyst is the purple variety of quartz. Its status was elevated above the other varieties of quartz because historically, the color purple was so often associated with royalty. Large amethysts were used as embellishments in a couple of pieces in the Crown Jewels of England and Russian Tsarina Catherine the Great is said to have coveted these purple crystals, sending thousands of miners into the Ural Mountains to look for mineral deposits containing these beautiful gems. At one time amethysts were quite rare but today deposits have been discovered in various locations throughout the world and they now enjoy great popularity due to their increased availability and affordable prices.
