Mexican onyx is a variety of calcite that is derived from stalagmites and stalactites that form in caverns. It is very translucent and fairly easy to carve. It is used extensively for carving ornamental and functional objects including items such as vases, bookends, bowls, plates, eggs, pyramids and statues. The artisans who create our pieces take the extra time required to make bowls, platters and lamps with beautiful forms and shapes. Please see Alabaster for more info.
To avoid confusion please note that this variety is not the same onyx as the quartz variety used in jewelry. That type of onyx is a more precious variety that is found banded in white and black. Mexican onyx on the other hand is banded with multiple orange, yellow, red, tan, brown and white colors that have a marble-like texture. This variety of calcite makes wonderful decorative pieces that are very attractive!
