Sandstone is a sedimentary rock that forms over thousands, even millions of years, as minute pieces of our earth break down and erode away by wind and water. This material is mostly made up of tiny grains of the minerals quartz and feldspar with grains ranging in size from 0.1mm to 2mm. These tiny particles are washed downstream where they eventually settle to the bottom of rivers, lakes and oceans forming layer upon layer. As the layers build up, pressure and heat increase which eventually cements the grains together, turning them in to rock. The material has varied colors and line thicknesses that create beautiful patterns transforming the rock into artwork created by nature. The material we carry is mostly from the 4 Corners area of the United States. It formed 180 to 250 million years ago in the "Shinarump" formation with the color induced by mineral springs containing iron oxides. The patterns and colors are purely nature's handiwork although they are so beautiful often people think they are hand painted by man. The material is then sawed and shaped into various products for you to enjoy in your home.
