The process of creating these beautiful boxes is called intarsia. Intarsia is the art of decorating a surface with inlaid patterns. Usually a different stone will be used to create the patterns in these exceptional works of art. The corners of some of the panels on these boxes have been replaced with pieces of lapis, malachite or rhodochrosite as accents of color against the tans and browns in the limestone. Matching mother-of-pearl dots are used as accents so you will always know how to match the top and bottom. In addition, the boxes have a magnetic closure. And, the best surprise of all is when you open the box and discover it is completely lined in the interior with varve a sedimentary rock composed of the annual layering of glacial lake sediments. Check out our other intarsia boxes for more information on these exceptional pieces.
