The Mercenaria clam has been replaced by calcite in this fossilized clam from Ruck's Pit in Okeechobee County, Florida. The scalenohedra of calcite are translucent and honey colored, filling the interior of this fossil clam, creating an attractive little pocket of crystals. The calcite in this also fluoresces light yellow under short wave UV.
